ZAP! founder, Tina Reynolds, recently sat down with ELLE magazine to share her expertise.

Read the full article HERE and Tina’s excerpts below…

Q: How does electrolysis differ from laser?

TINA: Electrolysis is hair removal using a fine sterile needle, which is inserted into the open follicle as heat is distributed. Laser is best for dark hair only, whereas electrolysis works on any hair color.

Q: When is the best time to get electrolysis?

TINA: Choose a time that you don’t mind at least a week of no sun exposure. Since electrolysis causes inflammation and the sun causes inflammation, we don’t like the two being combined after the treatment.

Q: What’s the best hair type for electrolysis?

TINA: If you have dark peach fuzz, the laser can cause something called paradoxical hypertrichosis which leads to even more hair growth. So laser on the face is best for thick and dark hairs and electrolysis works better for those with dark but thinner hairs. Laser works great on body hair like bikini, underarms and legs when they are dark and thick. But as it thins the hair it sometimes hits a plateau so we often do clean-up with electrolysis on clients after they’ve done several laser sessions.

Q: How many sessions does it take to see results?

TINA: Sometimes we have to treat the same follicle a few times to ensure that it is permanently killed — so it’s not always one and done.

Twelve of the women had polycystic ovary syndrome, while the rest had hirsutism with known cause.

After five days, the women’s levels of free testosterone (the biologically active form) declined, although their total testosterone level stayed the same. Women’s levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and estrogen rose, while their triglyceride levels dropped significantly.

Women with high male hormone levels may also have high levels of triglycerides, insulin resistance, and obesity, the researchers note.

“Spearmint can be an alternative to antiandrogenic treatment for mild hirsutism. However, further studies are needed for testing the reliability and availability of spearmint as a drug for hirsutism,” the researchers conclude.

SOURCE: Phytotherapy Research, online February 20, 2007

1875

The first person to use electrolysis for hair removal was Dr. Charles E. Michel (1833 – 1913), a St. Louis, Missouri ophthalmologist (eye doctor) who, in 1875, reported the results of his use of electrolysis in trichiasis (ingrown eyelashes) (St. Louis Clinical Record, October, 1875, 2:145-148). He had been performing electrolysis since 1869.
Dr. W.A. Hardaway, a St. Louis, Missouri dermatologist, gave the credit for the first use of electrolysis to Dr. Michel (Transactions of the American Dermatological Association, 1878, 4:337-340.) In this paper, Dr. Hardaway described his own results and those of others; an indication that numerous other physicians were also performing electrolysis.

1880 – 1900

The use of electrolysis became well known in the latter part of the nineteenth century. During this time, Dan Mahler established an electrolysis practice, and subsequently, an electrolysis equipment firm. The family business exists today as the Instantron Company, which has been operating continuously for over a century and is one of the world’s largest suppliers to the electrolysis profession.

1916

Paul N. Kree, of New York, developed the multiple needle technique for galvanic electrolysis. He was instrumental in the increased marketing of electrolysis services to the general public. Electrolysis spread from the medical profession to lay electrologists. The Kree Company dominated the performance and teaching of electrolysis in North America until the late 1970’s.

1924

Dr. Henri Bordier, of Lyon, France, developed the method of thermolysis (also called short-wave, diathermy, high-frequency etc.) Medical literature of this period indicates that thermolysis was probably attempted as far back as 1910, in Germany by Dr. Eitner.

1925

Dr. A. Rostenberg introduced thermolysis into the North American medical journals.

1928

Dr. Mildred Trotter published her classic article proving shaving does not affect hair growth.

1940’s

New equipment eliminated the crude spark-gap diathermy machines, which provided an unpredictable performance. Thermolysis became more widespread with the use of the simplified and more consistently reliable vacuum tube machines. Arthur Hinkel and Henri St. Pierre applied for the patent of their blend machine in 1945 and received it in 1948.

1956

Gordon Blackwell began publishing Electrolysis Digest, and continued until 1986. His reviews and critiques were vital to the dissemination of helpful information to electrologists throughout the world.

1968

Arthur Hinkel and Richard Lind widely publicized the blend in their text, Electrolysis, Thermolysis and the Blend. Hinkel formalized the concept of intensity x duration = units of lye (treatment energy), which is fundamental to a better understanding of electrolysis. The work of Hinkel and St. Pierre was brilliant, conceptually and technically, and of great assistance to a better scientific understanding of electrolysis.

1970’s

Electrolysis equipment became much more reliable and simple to use with the development of transistorized equipment. In November, 1979, the Copperwaites of Toronto established International Hair Route, a publication which continues to print articles of interest to all electrologists.

1980’s

Computerized electrolysis equipment became smaller, more reliable, and easier to use. Mr. Mark Van Orden, of the Fischer Company, was able to incorporate Hinkel’s formula into programmable computerized epilatorsepiltors. The AIDS virus stimulated development of pre-sterilized, disposable needles. In the early 1980’s, Drs. Toshio Kobayashi and Shiro Yamada described their technique of high-powered thermolysis, using an insulated needle.

1990’s Present Day

Standardized training and improved equipment are making electrolysis more popular and more accessible to people around the world. It is still the only method recognized by the FDA as Permanent Hair Removal.

Does shaving cause hair to grow faster, coarser and darker? This age old question is still asked repeatedly. A quick anatomy lesson on the structure of the follicle should help.

The hair follicle and its hair are fundamentally one structure. This structure can be divided anatomically into three segments:

(1) Infundibulum – the upper, funnel-shaped indentation that extends from the polar orifice in the epidermis (the little hole where we aim our needle) to the entrance of the sebaceous gland.

(2) Isthmus – the short midsection of the follicle, bounded by the sebaceous gland duct and the arrector pilli muscle.

(3) Inferior – extending from the arrector muscle to the base of the follicle.

The expanded lower end of the follicle is the hair bulb, which encloses the oval-shaped vascular-connective tissue papilla. This is an upgrowth of the dermis containing the blood supply and nerve endings to nourish the follicle.

An anatomic change occurs at the isthmus. The entire follicle beneath the isthmus can be considered “temporary” because it disappears during the involutional stage, or stage of regression of the hair follicle, and reforms again during the growth cycle. The upper segments, isthmus and infundibular, are “permanent.” At the isthmus, the cells of the inner root sheet disintegrate, and the outer root sheath – which is no longer in contact with an inner root sheath – begins to cornify, and form the hair we aim to remove. The hair shaft (that is the hair that is cut off when shaving) is a dead, cornified structure that extends from the follicle above the surface of the skin: only the follicle is alive. To make any difference in hair growth, the follicle itself must be disturbed. Shaving or cutting the dead structure (hair) will not have any effect on the follicle itself.

Shaving hair really is a form of cutting hair. Like cutting with scissors, shaving has no effect on hair growth. The myth was exploded by Dr. Mildred Trotter at the Washington University School of Medicine. Under Dr. Trotter¹s observation, three girls shaved their legs from knee to ankle, twice a week for a period of eight months. At the end of this time, microscopic examination revealed that there was absolutely no increase in the diameter or color of the hairs before or after the shaving period.

Reasons for the Misbelief

After shaving there is an illusion of growth, which has given rise to the false impression that shaving really does affect the growth. Let us examine those points that appear to support the idea.

1. The shortness of the shaft of a shaved hair allows changes in its length to be noticed more easily. If a hair is shaved right to the skin and then allowed to grow 1/16 of an inch, we readily notice the difference. However if the hair was already 6″ long and it grew an extra 1/16 of an inch (in the same period as the shaved hair) no one would be able to tell without some accurate way of measuring.

Taking the example of the male with a full beard, it is impossible to detect the daily increase in beard growth. But it is a different story with the clean-shaven person and his “five o¹clock shadow,” whose bristle growth can be seen on the very same day.

Because the follicles of terminal hair are not at right angles to the skin, shaving exposes more actual area of hair to the eye. If scissors are used to clip a hair, the cut is usually at a right angle to the direction of the growth. But shaving (given the angle of hair to blade) leaves a long-angled cut at the end of each remaining hair fiber. When the hairs grow out from the skin, they keep their “thickened” appearance, especially as they are being compared with the white background of the skin.

2. Apparent coarseness is caused by the short, shaved hairs being held more erect by the follicles clasped firmly around them.

Hairs do vary in structure, length, rate of growth, and response to various stimuli. But the follicle must be stimulated to cause an increase in hair growth. Shaving every day, even with vigor, would not affect the deep growing follicle. The increased hair growth you notice after shaving is in all probability caused by an increased hormonal stimulation. Which would have happened, shaving or not.

Ingrown hair is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle (folliculitis) or “razor bumps” (Pseudofolliculitis barbae), which vary in size. While ingrown hair most commonly appears in areas where the skin is shaved (beard, legs, pubic region), it can appear anywhere.

Anything which causes the hair to be broken off short with a sharp tip can cause ingrown hair. Shaving is the leading cause, followed by tight clothing and sometimes waxing.. The embedded hair causes a localized inflammation (sometimes painful) response in the skin. Sometimes ingrown hair occurs naturally without shaving.

Symptoms include rash, itching skin, hair which remains in spite of shaving, and infection and pus collecting under skin. Treatments for ingrown hairs include putting a warm washcloth over the ingrown hair, shaving in a different direction, exfoliating with facial scrubs, sponges, towels, or creams containing acids, treatment with Ibuprofen and prophylaxis with twice daily topical application of diluted Glycolic acid. Ingrown hair will often fall out after a couple of weeks. See more specific examples & information below.

TYPES OF INGROWN HAIRS

Superficial Ingrown Hair:

One of the most common types primarily found on the legs, more specifically on the lower legs. I refer to this ingrown hair as superficial because the hair is not embedded deep within the epidermis. Releasing it is relatively simple.

Cause: Generally, the superficial ingrown occurs from a lack of exfoliation.

Solution: Regular exfoliation. Using massage gloves at shower and bath time will help to release and prevent ingrown hairs.

Dormant Ingrown:

Usually found on the lower legs, these types of ingrown hairss lay parallel to the skin and are often too deep to remove. Generally, they dissolve in time. Dormant ingrowns can be lanced by a physician.

Cause: The natural direction of the follicle has been disrupted and/or the skin type has keratinized at a faster rate and in a tighter, surging pattern. The skin tends to feel like very tight, smooth leather. This skin type makes it more challenging to remove the hair because the mouth of the follicle forms tightly around the hair¹s shaft.

Solution: The #1 skin solution is regular exfoliation of the skin combined with removing the hair in the natural direction of growth. (Shave in the direction of hair growth, not against it)

The J-Peg Ingrown:

This is a hair inside the follicle, which begins to curl back down into the skin as it grows and attempts to either pass through the accumulated dead skin cells covering the mouth of the follicle or through an opening that does not exist. As a direct result, it creates a bump and can cause some discomfort until the hair is released. Generally, this type does not become infected when it develops in areas other than the face or bikini.

Cause: Lack of exfoliation and skin softening. The reason why this ingrown becomes infected is the natural direction of the follicle has been disrupted.

Solution: Epilating a hair in the natural direction of growth far exceeds the benefits of removing it against the natural direction of growth. A good home regimen of exfoliating and hydrating the skin will allow one to free their own follicles of accumulated dead skin cells, thus preventing the hair from becomingfromto become ingrown.

The Bikini Ingrown Hair:

These ingrown hairs most often look like little black dots or pinkish-red bumps. That¹s if they are not infected. Then there are those that look like purplish-red bumps which can actually become cystic.

The pressure from the hair growing inside the bump along with infection (pus and blood accumulation) can cause much discomfort until the hair is released. I¹ve seen a hair as long as 2’inches ² released from this type of ingrown.

Cause #1: Lack of exfoliation and removing the hair in the opposite direction of the natural pattern of growth. When hair is removed in the opposite direction of growth, often, the hair is broken off at the skin¹s surface allowing dead skin cells to easily form over the mouth of the follicle trapping the broken hair beneath. As the hair continues to grow, a red bump quickly develops and can often leaves the skin feeling itchy and uncomfortable. The one characteristic all ingrown hairs have is dead skin cells blocking the mouth of the follicle.

Cause #2: Lack of hydrating and moisturizing the newly exfoliated epidermis. I have seen so many women make the mistake of applying lotion to their skin only when it has a dry sallow look to it. The idea is to apply a good hydrating lotion when the skin looks great so that it keeps on looking its best.

Cause #3: Some people are highly prone to ingrown hairs. Their skin tends to keratinize at a much faster rate than the average person.

Solution: Removal of the hair in the natural growth only. Regular exfoliation, softening the skin and hydrating on a daily basis. A regular electrolysis regime will help to achieve maximum results.

Treatment Program:

The following are four recommendations that will help eliminate and prevent ingrown hair problems.

Drink plenty of water daily. We are all too familiar with this fact. Drink as much water as you can each day for maximum hydration.

Use a hydrating lotion everyday. Lotions containing animal or petroleum by-products should be avoided. They can clog pores and cause many other reflecting complications to the skin.

Exfoliate dead skin cells. Using Dead Sea salt mixed with cured sesame seed oil to massage onto the skin is an uncomplicated exfoliating option for all skin types. The results are excellent, lasting at least two weeks and leave an immediately visible impression.

Epilate the hair in the natural direction of the follicle. When hair is removed against its natural direction, you will have hair breakage and you will promote ingrown hairs.

If you are prone to getting serious ingrown hairs you may need to use a glycolic-based lotion to promote additional exfoliation. Better yet, just have the hair permanently removed by electrolysis!
